Building a Manufacturing Workforce Prepared to Compete

 A Workforce Management Workshop by
The Society of the Plastics Industry
and the Training Modernization Group

February 23, 2006 – 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
John Tyler Community College
Chester, Virginia

How Well-Trained and Productive Is Your Workforce?

Do Your First-Line Production Supervisors Have What It Takes To Lead?

Reduce Overhead – Improve Employee Performance – Increase Productivity
With SPI’s Workforce Management Workshop

The lack of systematic and coordinated employee training has a direct impact on a workforce‘s performance, as well as a dramatic impact on an organization’s bottom-line.  Still many companies carry on with outdated and ineffective training programs that do not enhance performance or productivity in any meaningful or measurable way.  At SPI’s Workforce Management Workshop, keynote speaker Joe Barto of Training Modernization Group will show attendees how to get the most out their human capital as he presents employee training principles, processes and practical applications for Building a Manufacturing Workforce Prepared to Compete.  Attendees will learn how to:

  • Improve business performance by developing metrics for measuring impact.
  • Attract, hire and retain the best talent in the right numbers with the right skills and at the right time.
  • Improve the performance of the current workforce.
  • Identify and cultivate future first-line leaders and their immediate managers by developing leadership and performance indicators.
  • Build bench strength and develop a succession plan.
  • Modernize existing training programs.
  • Develop and implement a human capital management strategy.
  • Utilize Return on Investment models and prepare successful budget requests.

Learn First-Line Production Leadership Development Planning
At SPI’s Workforce Management Workshop

Poor leadership by production supervisors can manifest into high employee turnover, increased down-time, customer orders not being met on time and projects coming in over budget – ultimately driving profits down.  The majority of first-line supervisors in manufacturing tend to be promoted from within based on their high performance as operators.  Thus, most have very little leadership training or none at all.  Managing people and production involve skill sets, beyond technical competence, that need to be systematically nurtured.  Yet, many companies wait until they lose a supervisor or plant manager before contemplating who can fill those roles.

Because first-line supervisors are the gatekeepers between management and production and their role in the success of an organization is critical, SPI’s Workforce Management Workshop will show you how to identify and cultivate future leaders.

"When supervisors are not properly cultivated and lack important skills such as motivating people, effectively communicating with subordinates and management, solving problems and understanding production's link to the bottom line - problems will surface,” warns human capital management and training expert, Joe Barto of Training Modernization Group.

Executive Panel to Focus on Human Capital Challenges of Mergers & Acquisitions
At SPI’s Workforce Management Workshop

Joe Barto captivates the audience at SPI’s Workforce Management Seminar held in Lenoir, NC last May.

What Attendees Said About SPI's First Two Workforce Management Workshops

"I loved the teamwork approach with everyone in the room working together."

"Joe Barto provided a great platform and did an excellent job of directing the discussion."

"The great ideas that the group came up with related directly to our company."

"The group was small enough to facilitate discussion, but big enough for new ideas."

A panel of senior human resources professionals from well-known plastics companies will share their challenges for maintaining a competitive workforce in an environment of mergers and acquisitions.  Rick Carroll, V.P. of Human Resources for Captive Plastics will explain what he sees as critical requirements and drivers in the process of integrating existing workforces into a new corporate structure.  Last year, Captive Plastics, Inc. acquired Spentech Plastic Containers, Inc., a producer of rigid plastic bottles with two manufacturing facilities in Richmond, VA.
